“Pick Your Own Adoption Price” and Be a Hero to an Abandoned Feline

Fallston, MD (June 10, 2014) – Spring and summer are typically the busiest times of the year at the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC), and this year is no different. Right now, the shelter is full to the brim with wonderful adult cats and kittens of every age and color that dream of homes of their very own. To save lives and find homes for hundreds of abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens in the Harford County community, HSHC is offering its popular “Pick Your Own Adoption Price” special!

Through July 31st, adopters may visit HSHC or HSHC’s satellite cat adoption center, Rescue Me! at Harford Mall, select the perfect feline friend, and take advantage of the “Pick Your Own Adoption Price” special. With the “Pick Your Own Adoption Price” offer, there’s no catch, no hidden agenda, and no set adoption fee. Adoptive families are asked to consider that for every cat it shelters, HSHC invests well over $100 to ready the cat for a permanent home, including immunizations, medical treatments and testing, food and care. Knowing that they’re getting a fully-vetted cat or kitten from an independent community non-profit organization, adopters can decide what their adoption price will be.

If the new family friend isn’t already spayed or neutered, HSHC collects a $50 deposit at the time of adoption and issues a certificate that covers the spay or neuter procedure only (additional charges may apply and should be discussed with the chosen veterinarian). Upon completion of the spay or neuter procedure within 60 days of adoption, the $50 deposit is refunded.

In 2013, HSHC took in just under 3,000 cats and kittens and expects this year to be just as busy. The spring and summer months are especially challenging because of the increased numbers of kittens and pregnant mothers entering the shelter. “It happens every spring and summer, and the sheer number of incoming animals can be overwhelming,” says Mary Leavens, Executive Director. “Our primary goal is to help find forever homes for as many adoptable animals as possible.”
